Classical and adaptive control of ex vivo skeletal muscle contractions using Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)

چکیده
Functional Electrical Stimulation is a promising approach to treat patients by stimulating the peripheral nerves and their corresponding motor neurons using electrical current. This technique helps maintain muscle mass and promote blood flow in the absence of a functioning nervous system. The goal of this work is to control muscle contractions from FES via three different algorithms and assess the most appropriate controller providing effective stimulation of the muscle. An open-loop system and a closed-loop system with three types of model-free feedback controllers were assessed for tracking control of skeletal muscle contractions: a Proportional-Integral (PI) controller, a Model Reference Adaptive Control algorithm, and an Adaptive Augmented PI system. Furthermore, a mathematical model of a muscle-mass-spring system was implemented in simulation to test the open-loop case and closed-loop controllers. These simulations were carried out and then validated through experiments ex vivo. The experiments included muscle contractions following four distinct trajectories: a step, sine, ramp, and square wave. Overall, the closed-loop controllers followed the stimulation trajectories set for all the simulated and tested muscles. When comparing the experimental outcomes of each controller, we concluded that the Adaptive Augmented PI algorithm provided the best closed-loop performance for speed of convergence and disturbance rejection.

Activation of human quadriceps femoris muscle during dynamic contractions: effects of load on fatigue.
Muscle fatigue is both multifactorial and task dependent. Electrical stimulation may assist individuals with paralysis to perform functional activities [functional electrical stimulation (FES), e.g., standing or walking], but muscle fatigue is a limiting factor. One method of optimizing force is to use stimulation patterns that exploit the catchlike property of skeletal muscle [catchlike-induci...

High intensity stimulation is a feasible clinical method for preventing effects of early denervation, however in long-term denervation exponential currents could not elicit tetanic contractions of denervated-degenerated muscles (DDM) powerful enough to sustain motility functions. In our earlier clinical work, we demonstrated that electrical stimulation with exponential current could slow down a...

Myoelectric signal remains the gold standard to objectively monitor muscular activities despite the tedious task of separating cross talk from contractions. This work evaluated the signal characteristics during FES-evoked contractions in muscle force and fatigue assessment to reiterate its inherent setbacks despite overwhelming research efforts to improve its signal to noise ratio. It was obser...

We proposed a fuzzy control scheme to implement the cycle-to-cycle control for restoring swing phase of gait using functional electrical stimulation (FES). We designed two fuzzy controllers for the biceps femoris short head (BFS) and the vastus muscles to control flexion and extension of the knee joint during the swing phase. Control capabilities of the designed fuzzy controllers were tested an...
